Water metering is coming... the facts you need to know

Contents of this page:

Why We Need To Save Water

It may not always seem like it but Folkestone and Dover has a very dry climate. In fact it’s one of the driest areas in the UK and many parts of the Middle East have more rain than we do. It’s also getting even drier and warmer thanks to climate change, all of which faces us with a difficult challenge when it comes to supplying water.

To complicate matters further we are not well off locally for natural supplies of water. We have no major sources of surface water to draw on either in rivers or reservoirs and so we have to reply on underground water stored in local chalk and gravel aquifers. This water is pumped out from boreholes across the district and we have around 20 main sources. So water in our area is a scarce resource and we have to manage the use of it very carefully to ensure a long term secure high quality supply.

How We Can Provide A Secure Supply

Our company has been supplying water to Folkestone and Dover for more than 150 years and this is our biggest challenge yet. Our solution is to bring in a twin track approach with major capital investment in new water resources teamed with a large scale water conservation programme. FDWS is investing £27m in new water sources and infrastructure over the next five years. We are also be introducing metering on a compulsory basis to encourage the careful use of water.

What water scarcity status means

The Secretary of State for the Department for the Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has approved our company’s application for Water Scarcity Status. The Status highlights the need for us to conserve water and allows FDWS to introduce compulsory metering for domestic customers on a phased basis. We want all our domestic customers to have meters by 2015. Metered customers reduce the non essential use of water and keep a close check on leakage e.g. dripping taps and avoid wasting water. As a result metered customers use on average 10% - 15% less water, providing a major and vital step forward in water conservation.
