Turn Off Water

Get to know your system, especially the position of the main stopvalve and the stopvalves controlling the flow of water from the hot water tank or cylinder and the storage cistern.

The main stopvalve is located near to where the water service pipe enters the building, usually under the kitchen sink, but possibly in the hall cupboard, bathroom or garage. It may be combined with a drain off tap which can be used to drain down the whole system if the property is left empty for a long period of time without any form of heating during the winter.

The hot water tank or cylinder is usually in the airing cupboard. The storage cistern, where separate from the hot water tank, is normally in the roof space. The stopvalves are usually located adjacent to these tanks.

Make sure that all stopvalves operate easily and that they do shut off the supply of water to the appropriate fittings.
