Thawing Out

If the worst happens and your pipes become frozen you should:

  • Shut off any water heating appliance. Do not under any circumstances light the boiler to thaw out a hot water or central heating system.
  • Check the system for split pipes and broken joints, especially close to a water fitting.
  • If no damage is visible, open the tap and apply heat gently working along the pipe from the tap end with an electric fan heater or hair dryer. Cloths soaked in hot water may also be used but do not use a blow lamp or naked flame. If a leak is revealed turn off the stopvalve and carry out repairs.

Call A Qualified Plumber

If your pipes are frozen, the probability that other property owners are similarly affected and plumbers will be in great demand and very busy. So make a note of the telephone number or address of a plumber now rather than wait until you have a real emergency on your hands.
