Lydd Metering Pilot

Following the successful introduction of comprehensive metering in the Lydd area in early 2007 we have seen a 7% reduction in demand for water.

The next stage in the pilot is now being announced and this is a different tariff scheme that will be trialled in the town.

This will mean that while some customers remain on the current flat rate tariff others will move to a stepped tariff. Under this stepped tariff an initial amount of water to cover essential use will be charged at a rate below the standard rate, with all additional water charged at a higher than standard rate.

Around 1,100 customers will be charged on the stepped tariff basis and some 500 will remain on the fixed tariff. Customers will be advised under which tariff they will be charged early in the New Year and the pilot will be launched from 1 April, subject to final approval from Ofwat in early 2008.

An essential use allowance of 80 cubic metres per property each year (219 litres per day) is designed to cover all essential household needs including cooking, washing and laundry requirements. Customers with larger families will be able to claim an increased volume of water for essential use as will those with special medical needs. Information on how to claim will be provided to all affected customers in advance.

A letter has been sent to all customers in the town advising them of this next stage in the pilot and a copy of that letter, together with Q&As on the scheme, can be downloaded from this page.

This page will be updated on a regular basis as the Lydd pilot progresses.
